Mark Zuckerberg talks Apple, Facebook integration during Web 2.0 Summit

On the second day of the Web 2.0 Summit, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg made some comments on his company’s dealings with Apple over Ping.

Zuckerberg also had an explanation for why the company had not partnered with Apple to let it pull in social data for Ping. He says that Facebook has had to invest tens of millions of dollars into infrastructure to enable games from large developers like Zynga, which is why Facebook and Zynga agreed to a formal alliance. Zuckerberg says that if the company is going to make an investment like this, “we want to have an understanding that you won’t just import our data — and that you try to contribute back. We’re working through that.”

Now that we somewhat understand the basics for why Facebook is still blocking ping maybe they and Apple can come to terms and work out some sort of deal to incorporate Facebook into Ping to help make it more useable.

Recently Twitter allowed Apple to intergrate their services into Ping so it would be extremely useful and welcome for Facebook to follow suit but we will have to continue to wait through the Apple and Facebook negotiations.

Apple iPhone, iPad Software Update servers down – Start your iOS 4.2 rumors?

Looks like the Apple software update servers are acting very oddly this morning. They are sporadically going down, then back up. Could this mean iOS 4.2 is imminent? As we near the end of November, it isn’t unreasonable to think that Apple is getting close to releasing iOS 4.2. As of now, I’ve had the update servers tell me twice the update servers couldn’t be contacted. Once it told me my software is up to date. We’ll keep checking!

And a friendly reminder to jailbreakers, make sure you save your SHSH blobs and don’t get too update button happy. If you’d like to keep your jailbreak, make sure you don’t upgrade to iOS 4.2 until a jailbreak released.

Apple iPad makes Time Magazine’s Best Inventions of 2010

Apple’s revolutionary iPad tablet has made Time Magazine’s ‘50 Best Inventions of 2010' list. From TIME:

How does Apple keep out-inventing the rest of the tech industry? Often, it’s by reinventing a product category that its competitors have given up on. In theory, the iPad is merely a follow-up to such resoundingly unpopular slate-style computers as Microsoft’s Tablet PC. But Apple is the first company that designed finger-friendly hardware and software from scratch rather than stuffing a PC into a keyboardless case. When it calls the results “magical” and “revolutionary,” it’s distorting reality only slightly. One analyst says the iPad is the fastest-selling nonphone gizmo in consumer-electronics history.

Another interesting tidbit was that Flipboard, an iPad app with a magazine-style approach to Twitter and Facebook, was also featured on the list as a top invention of 2010.

The iPad has seen amazing success since its debut, even surprising us in some cases. With the holiday season upon us, it will be interesting to see the sales numbers Apple has to announce on their next earnings call.

Apple TV magically appears on Amazon’s best-selling gadget list

Apple TV is currently ranked in the number 12 position on Amazon’s best-selling gadget list. What makes this so interesting is that Apple TV wasn’t even listed at all until now, despite its sales numbers. When that was discovered and began to be questioned on several prominent online sites, the Apple TV magically showed up. (Amazon has yet to respond to questions on why Apple TV was originally excluded from their list.)

Also an interesting bit is that the competing Roku XDS and Boxee Box are also on the list, though below Apple TV’s position.

Given that the Apple TV has only been out for a very short period of time and has managed to beat out 88 other gadgets on Amazon’s Top 100 devices list, does this bode well for Apple TV and its owners?

Steve Jobs email says Keynote ‘11 will have AirPlay capabilities to Apple TV

According to TUAW<, Steve Jobs has replied to yet another email in which he indicates that Keynote ‘11 might have a nice new feature: AirPlay streaming to Apple TV.

The email to Jobs went as follows:

Will the new Apple TV accept Keynote presentations via iOS device or a Mac? If it will I will go buy two at an Apple store tonight.

Jobs’ purported reply:

It’s all coming soon. Stay tuned.

If you recall, the Back to the Mac event, Jobs never made mention of the iWork ‘11 suite. With iOS 4.2’s AirPlay and the Mac App Store set to distribute iWork to desktop the same way the iOS App Store does for iPad apps today, the timing sure seems right. Maybe even for an iPhone version of iWork?

Why would Apple make such a big deal about the Beatles coming to iTunes?

Earlier today Apple.com put up a huge teaser for iTunes news, scheduled for 10am ET tomorrow. No media event. No keynote. No time to launch major new product initiatives before the keynote. So while rumors swirled it might be the launch of iTunes.com cloud media streaming or a similarly cloud-based subscription service, the intransigent recording labels and absurd international licensing deals being what they are, those never seemed likely. Sure, iTunes 10.1 and iOS 4.2 could have something hidden in the code, but Apple can’t even get the jerks over at NBC and CBS to let them rent TV shows, so all that potential seems destined to stay hidden, at least for now.

What did seem more likely is what I tweeted about earlier today:

Are they really crazy enough to take over the Apple.com front page just to tease a Beatles announcements?

And the answer it seems, courtesy of some confirmation by way the Wall Street Journal, is yes.

Or more precisely Steve Jobs is.

My guess is the Beatles are a big part of the reason he took Apple into music and built iTunes and the iTunes Store to begin with, and his inability to get them sooner has no doubt been a source of considerable frustration.

So now, if it really is a done deal, Jobs and Apple could very well want to make some noise about it. Not keynote level, but Apple.com level.

Will the surviving Beatles will be a part of the announcement, and will they be getting an iTunes LP? Heck, will iPad finally get iTunes LP so we, and Steve Jobs, can kick back and relive our youth flipping through gorgeous album art and liner notes? Who knows.

Sure, maybe the Beatles is just part of what’s coming tomorrow. Maybe we’ll get iTunes Live Streaming. Maybe we’ll get subscriptions. Maybe we’ll get something more. (Not a special Beatles-edition White iPhone with iOS 4.2 release on Verizon, however. Not. Going. To. Happen.) But right now all signs point to the Beatles, and that’s why.
